Methodology

Every calculator on this site runs the same way. Your inputs go into a formula in the browser, and the screen shows the result of that formula. We do not store a preferred answer and reveal it when the inputs look familiar.

Time value of money

The finance calculator solves the standard equation used by five-key financial calculators. Present value, future value, payment, periodic rate, and the number of periods balance to zero. Money you pay is negative and money you receive is positive. The periodic rate is built from the nominal annual rate, the compounding frequency C/Y, and the payment frequency P/Y: one plus the nominal rate divided by C/Y, raised to C/Y divided by P/Y, minus one. Beginning-of-period payments multiply the annuity factor by one plus the periodic rate.

A fixed loan payment is the payment that amortizes a present value to zero. Schedules round each period’s interest to the cent, then apply the rest of the payment to principal. That matches servicing practice more closely than an unrounded formula, and it is why a calculator and a lender can disagree by cents.

2026 tax and contribution figures

Ordinary federal brackets and the standard deduction follow IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and the IRS news release on 2026 inflation adjustments. For 2026 the standard deduction used here is $16,100 single or married filing separately, $32,200 married filing jointly, and $24,150 head of household. Social Security tax uses the 2026 wage base of $184,500 at 6.2%, and Medicare uses 1.45% plus the additional 0.9% above the statutory threshold.

Retirement inputs use the IRS 2026 limits announced in IR-2025-111: $24,500 elective deferral, $8,000 age-50 catch-up, $7,500 IRA limit, and $1,100 IRA catch-up. HSA limits follow Rev. Proc. 2025-19: $4,400 self-only and $8,750 family, plus the $1,000 age-55 catch-up. Required minimum distributions use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. These pages omit credits, state schedules, and special family situations on purpose. An estimate that invents them would look more complete and be less honest.

What we will not pretend

Rent-versus-buy compares ending wealth under assumptions you can see: appreciation, rent growth, selling costs, and a return on money that is not spent on housing. It ignores tax deductions. Zakat is 2.5% of the wealth you mark as qualifying, above a nisab you enter. Estate tax applies 40% above an editable exemption that defaults to $15 million and should be checked against the current IRS exclusion. Currency uses a live mid-market feed when the browser can reach it, and labeled reference rates otherwise. A bank’s spread is never included, because we do not know your bank’s price.

If a formula cannot produce a finite result, the page says so. A payment that does not cover interest does not receive a made-up payoff date.

How to reproduce a result

Open the calculator, leave the fields as they are, and press Calculate. The headline on the screen is the result of those fields. This page’s formulas are the same ones the button uses. If you change a field, press Calculate again. Clear hides the previous result so you do not mix two passes.

Loan schedules round each period’s interest to the cent, then send the rest of the payment to principal. That is why a long loan can differ by cents from an unrounded textbook formula, and why two honest calculators can still disagree by a dollar.

Signs, frequencies, and inflation

On the finance calculator, money you pay is negative and money you receive is positive. The periodic rate comes from the nominal annual rate, compounding periods, and payment periods. Beginning-of-period payments, used by many leases, get one extra period of interest. Those settings stay collapsed until you open them, and the defaults match an ordinary end-of-period loan.

Inflation is applied only when you type it or when you lower a return and treat it as a real rate. Doing both counts inflation twice. The exact real return divides one plus the nominal return by one plus inflation. Subtracting the two rates is only a rough check.

Figures we will name, and figures we will not

The 2026 standard deduction, wage base, retirement limits, and HSA limits are the ones cited in the tax and retirement tools, from the IRS releases named above. Required minimum distributions use the Uniform Lifetime Table. Zakat uses 2.5 percent above a nisab you enter. Estate tax uses 40 percent above an editable exemption that defaults to $15 million.

We do not invent state brackets, a private credit policy, or a bank’s retail exchange spread. Currency uses a live mid-market feed when the browser can reach it and labeled reference rates otherwise. If a formula cannot finish, the page says so instead of printing a payoff date for a payment that does not cover interest.

More from figures we will name, and figures we will not

Retirement calculators compound the contribution at the convention the page names, usually once a year with the deposit at the end of the year unless the tool says otherwise. They do not coordinate an IRA limit with a 401(k) limit. You add those ceilings yourself. A workplace match appears only on the 401(k) page, and only to the percent you type.

Auto, mortgage, and personal-loan pages use a standard amortizing payment. They do not model a promotional rate that jumps, a balloon the form does not ask for, or a penalty for paying early. If your contract has one of those, the page is the simple case and the contract is the real case.

FAQs

Where do the 2026 limits come from?

IRS inflation releases for brackets and the standard deduction, IR-2025-111 for retirement limits, and Rev. Proc. 2025-19 for HSA limits.

Why do loan pennies differ from my lender?

Schedules round interest to the cent each period. Lenders can also add fees and an escrow cushion this form does not see.

What does a negative future value mean?

On the five-key sign convention, a negative result is cash in the other direction. The finance page translates it. It is not automatically a loss.

Does every page include inflation?

No. Inflation is in the result only when you type an inflation rate or you choose a real return on purpose.

What if the formula cannot finish?

The page says the figures cannot be calculated. A payment at or below interest will not be given a fake payoff date.
