How this result is built
Add a tip and optional tax, then split the total across the people at the table.
The tip is a percent of the bill you enter. If that bill is pre-tax and you also want tax in the total, put the tax rate in its field. If the receipt already includes tax, leave the tax field at zero so you do not add it twice.
What the opening example is for
The split divides the whole total, including tip, by the number of people. It assumes an even split. Uneven shares are a conversation, not a formula.
The walkthrough below uses the numbers already sitting in Tip Calculator. Press Calculate and the headline should match this page. Then put your own figures in. The math does not run until you press the button, and Clear hides the result.
What each field is doing
The “Bill before tip” line on Tip Calculator starts at $86.00. Leave that figure only when it matches the statement, the quote, or the plan you are testing. Press Calculate after the edit so the chart and the schedule move with it.
Tip Calculator treats “Tip” as its own entry, and the form opens with 18%. A round example is useful for learning the page. It is a poor substitute for the number on your own paperwork, so replace it and run the form again.
The remaining fields
Before you replace it, “Tax already to add” reads 0% on Tip Calculator. Leave at 0 if the bill already includes tax. The other fields stay put while you change this one. That is the clean way to see what this line is doing inside the result.
Look at “People” first if you are checking Tip Calculator: the filled value is 3. If the label is a rate, type the annual figure the contract uses. If it is money, type the amount that will actually move, not a rounded hope.
The opening result, line by line
Press Calculate on the opening form and Each person pays is $33.83. That is the number the rest of this section is talking about.
Tip is $15.48 when you run the opening figures on Tip Calculator. That line is part of the same calculation as the headline. It is not a second balance you can spend on top of the result. Change one input and press Calculate if you want to see whether this line moves.
On this opening pass, tax is $0.00. That line is part of the same calculation as the headline. It is not a second balance you can spend on top of the result. Change one input and press Calculate if you want to see whether this line moves.
How those lines were produced
Tip Calculator reports that total is $101.48. That line is part of the same calculation as the headline. It is not a second balance you can spend on top of the result. Change one input and press Calculate if you want to see whether this line moves.
A second pass changes only “Bill before tip”, from $86.00 to $94.60. Each person pays moves from $33.83 to $37.21. Nothing else on the form was edited, so the gap between those two results is the effect of that one field on Tip Calculator. If the gap is tiny, this page is not very sensitive to that entry. If the gap is large, get that entry from a document before you plan around the result.
What this page will not claim
Tip Calculator answers the everyday question in the form. Inflation, a bank’s fee, or a rate that changed this morning can move the real outcome. The page tells you which rate it used when that distinction matters.
Tip Calculator stops at its own formula. When the next question is different, open Discount Calculator (Percent off, then tax on what remains.); Sales Tax Calculator (Add the tax, or pull it back out of a total.); Budget Calculator (Income minus the jobs you gave the money.). Do not add those results to this one as if they were the same kind of dollar.
Check the result before you use it
Start on Tip Calculator by reading the labels, not the headline. The opening labels are Bill before tip ($86.00), Tip (18%), Tax already to add (0%), People (3). If a label is not the fact you have, the result cannot turn into that fact later. The illustration on the form lands on $33.83. When you press Calculate and see that same figure, the button and this explanation are using one formula.
Change one field at a time. Write down the headline, edit a single line, and press Calculate again. A large jump means that line carries the result. A line that does not move is a line the formula ignores, which is a reason to confirm you opened the right page. Tip Calculator is built for one job: Tip, tax, and a fair split. The description on the page says the same thing in a sentence: Add a tip and optional tax, then split the total across the people at the table.
When the paperwork disagrees
Then hold the headline next to a source outside the site. That source might be a loan estimate, an account statement, a pay stub, or the public limit named in the methodology. A few cents of difference on a long schedule is ordinary rounding. A different rate, a fee you never typed, or a tax the form does not ask for is not rounding. Correct the input. Do not average the page with the paperwork.
When the outside source still disagrees, Tip Calculator has reached the edge of what it will claim. It will not phone a lender, pull a county record, or apply a credit you left blank. Send the calculator name, every input, and the result you expected through the contact page if you think the formula itself is wrong. Until that is settled, read $33.83 as the output of the fields above and nothing else.
FAQs
Do I tip on tax?
Custom varies. This page tips on the bill amount you type. If you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal as the bill.
What do the opening figures on Tip Calculator assume?
They are a worked example, not your account. Bill before tip starts at $86.00. Tip starts at 18%. Tax already to add starts at 0%. People starts at 3. Press Calculate and you should see each person pays of $33.83. Replace every line with your own figures before you act on it.
What happens if I change Bill before tip?
Bill before tip is one of the drivers on Tip Calculator. Change it, leave the other fields alone, and press Calculate. The headline and the lines under it move only to the extent the formula uses that field. Clear removes the result so the next set does not sit beside a stale one.
How is this different from the Discount page?
Tip Calculator answers the question in its own fields: Tip, tax, and a fair split. The Discount Calculator page is for a different question: Percent off, then tax on what remains. Run both only when you need both answers, and do not add the headlines together.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Tip Calculator computes in the browser after you press Calculate. The desk does not keep a copy of the balance, the income, or the rate you typed. Still, do not put an account number or a password into a money field.
This page is educational. It is not a lender’s quote, a tax filing, or personal financial advice. The methodology explains the formulas and the disclaimer explains the limit.
